While reading CNN.com today I came upon something of particular interest to me. The article I found is called: “Five important goals to improve your diet”. The first goal listed struck me as the most exciting of the five. The goal listed is for people to try new foods and expand there current selection. This goal is of particular interest because the entire semester, thus far, has been focused on discussing new and interesting foods and there health benefits/consequences. The article explains that adding new foods into our diet not only expands our knowledge of food but can possibly provide nutritional benefits not yet experienced. Furthermore, the article explains that diets which include a “variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and oils” provide a lot of vitamins and antioxidants. Finally, the article suggests trying at least one new food item per month and if you like that item, include it in your diet for the future.
Another goal listed in the article is eating more whole grains. The article lists that consuming whole grains can “protect against several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.” Additionally, whole grains can help combat high cholesterol and their high fiber content can make you feel full longer.
The other three health goals include: cooking dinner more often, eating breakfast everyday, and snacking more healthfully. I feel that all five are equally important to a healthier diet. For those looking for more information on all the five goals, it can be found here:
