Understanding calories and fat

In the state of Kentucky, the state legislature is considering passing a bill requiring fast food chains to post calorie counts. Calories, as we scientists know, is a measure of heat. As it is now been replaced by the Joule (SI unit), it is the common reference unit for food energy. Calories are the energy required to power our body. In the article a Senator says the measure is necessary as it would "improve the health of Kentuckians by letting them know just how fattening fast food can be." However calorie count does not correspond to "fattening", as an increased amount of calorie intake does not necessarily indicate an increase of fat. Balance of calories, exercise, and fat consumption our the only true ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This clearly shows how the media has misconstrued scientific terms for the general public. What we clearly need is more scientists in the media, and until that happens confusion will continue to remain.

Gotta love politicians and their understanding of science. Sometimes it scares me to think that they are the ones making all the descisions on how we practice science in America. Scientist lobbyists where are you?
