Sweetness

Sugar substitutes have replaced sugar in increasing numbers of food and drinks, and many more Americans seem to be consuming beverages and food products marked sugar-free. I also always opt for the sugar free cola versus the soda packed with close to forty grams of sugar. Recognizing that artificial sweeteners have been criticized for some time, I did some research to avoid putting my health at risk.
It seems as though Aspartame, used in brands like NutraSweet and Equal, have shown to cause numerous amounts of harmful health effects like blurred vision, personality changes, hyperactivity, joint pain, anxiety attacks, symptoms of mimicking heart attacks, nausea, migraines, hearing loss, vertigo, and brain cell damage. Sucralose that is found in Splenda is a chlorocarbon. Chlorocarbons have shown to cause organ, reproductive, and genetic damage. Chlorocarbons have also shown to shrink the thymus gland (involved in developing the immune system) up to forty percent . Finally, there is Saccharin found in Sweet N’ Low. Saccharin was by far the most criticized as the warning on the label claimed that the sweetener has shown to cause cancer in animals. Many people scared of the carcinogenic effects of Saccharine switched to sweeteners containing aspartame. Now new research has removed saccharin from the list of cancer causing substances. Thus, Saccharin viewed by most as worst artificial sweetener might actually be the least harmful.
So for anyone out there who wants to cut down on sugar, I would suggest Sweet N Low over the other sweeteners; however, the best bet would probably be to stay away from all the artificial sweeteners and use sugar in moderation.
