I teach Chemistry at Emory University. Next semester, I will teach a writing intensive seminar entitled: Perspectives on Chemistry. It is a really a great class that touches on the many ways that society influences science and chemistry impacts society.
I mentioned that this is a writing intensive course. Most science majors detest writing, but this course fulfills two requirements: a seminar and an upper division writing requirement. In addition to several formal papers, I have asked students to keep a journal. Blah! The results have not been great. Some write very little. Others write fake reactions to scientific journal articles. Very few students freely express their opinions about science. (Remember, science is supposed to be objective and apparently we have over stressed this during the first three years of college.)
So, I am thinking about requiring a blog instead of a journal. These 20 year old tech savvy kids should find blogging more natural. At least, I hope. This semester will begin my own foray into the world of Blogs. I have read them, but never written one.
